An installation, performance, light structure by Jia Yu Wu (Performance, Xinghai Conservatory of Music), Timo Raddatz (Theatre, Dramaturgy, Zurich University of the Arts), Cindy Cheng I-Hsin (Fine Arts, Taipei National University of the Arts) & Raúl Castro Estévez (Music Performance, Zurich University of the Arts) at McaM Shanghai.
Intro
The work includes the main site-specific structure constructed out of Chinese xuan paper which symbolises history and information, with text and sound installations, dance and music performances in reaction to it.
Concept
In this work, we aim to explore on the idea of what remains of us as human beings, how methods of communication evolved through different times as well as how information intertwines and reshapes itself in time. In an abandoned space, we attempt to play with the poetics and aesthetics of modern day perception of information within an organic structure situated in between indoor and the outdoor. The audience is invited to have a drink and wait for the structure to initiate an interactive act or simply to fall apart under unpredictable weather conditions. What would be the remains of the remaining?
Process
In the beginning of discussion, the group reached a consensus on the theme regarding time, information and history, as well as how we as individual human beings relate to it. For the silent presentation in Hong Kong, we created a scale model of the structure as a sketch to imagine the possible spatial arrangements. In Shanghai, we began with the actual building of the structure and started with the writing and composing of the text and sound pieces. As the building process went on, we came across the extreme differences in the conceptual direction as well as aesthetic preferences regarding the many elements and details. Nevertheless, we were glad that we were able to in the end act a performance out of a commonly shared idea and out of our very own expectations.
