3 – Excursion: African Community on Lantau Island

Being a person of color comes with certain prejudices in Hongkong. Adapting to it, without denying the own identiy, calls for creative strategies. The African Community found its enclave and safe haven on Lantau Island. A green and lush paradise next to Hongkong Island and only a 30 minutes ferryride away from the bustling city. The artist Alan Kaze led the group to his studio on the island where he makes art detached from the market. The high-pressure environment of Hongkong Island is far away here, not geographically, but in spirit. On Lantau Island, the slow life reigns, defined by positivity and openness.
